Another Fine Mess [Audio CD] FC Kahuna

As we prepare for a slew of summer chill-out albums and Ibiza-branded chart fodder, Another Fine Mess by FC Kahuna reminds us that dance music isn't about bikinis and picturesque sunsets. A progression from the City Rockers sound that rose (and disappeared) so quickly in 2002, this electro take on acid-house has all the knob-twiddling goodness of electro-pop but with a speaker rattling bottom end that electroclash often lacked.

Opening with Kahuna's mix of Jolly Music's "K-Fun", it's a funky, good-time set with an eye on impressing the head-nodding massive as well as the club kids; a glance over the track listing confirms it, with The Free Association, Blur and the Polyphonic Spree all making an appearance. Those discouraged by the vocal strains of Damon Albarn or Brian Molko should definitely face their fears as the segue from "Superbad" to Blur's "Music is my Radar" into "Plus One" provides one of the most musically satisfying moments on the album.

Another Fine Mess is a fantastic mix of music, much of which will rarely see the commercially available light of day. It highlights tastemakers FC Kahuna as nothing short of astounding DJs. --David Trueman
